Fantastic 4…

If you don’t like Apple products, then stop reading now. Seriously – I’m tired of all the hating (I’ve gotten enough of that from all the Laker Haters). Guess what? Apple isn’t forcing you to buy anything so go get an HTC Incrediwhatever, Droid Megasize or whatever floats your boat. If you want some info on the Apple iPhone 4 – read on. Sure, I like Apple products, but I’ll always give you a fair opinion on their stuff. I’ve only messed with it for about 3 hours so look for a more extensive review later, for now – here are my initial impressions.

First off – I want to address the two largest problems that surround the launch:

A. Do I have the yellow blotches? Nope. Although it plagues some, I’ve heard its an issue with the adhesive not fully evaporating and goes away after some use. Either way, I don’t have the issue.
B. Do I lose reception when I hold the phone with my left hand in palm as a result of the external antenna? Nope. I tried even cupping the sucker in both hands – no noticeable difference in reception.

Moving on…I have some questions for prospective buyers:

1. Do you own a 3GS?
No I have a 3G = Go get the iPhone 4.
Yes I own a 3GS= Did you upgrade to iOS4?

2. I have a 3GS and I have iOS4.
Do you want HD Video/HD Pics? Flash?
Are you satisfied with your current screen?
Do you want Facetime?

I ask these questions because they can lead you to a good decision as to whether or not you really “need” a 4G.

I0S4 is VERY slick on the 3GS, runs great – the additional speed on the camera is nice (not to mention the zoom) and the whole experience is definitely more zippy. I don’t think it’s fair to sing the praises of multi-tasking yet since it’s not supported by all apps. The iOS4 upgrade might be enough for those 3GS owners that aren’t eligible for an upgrade or aren’t ready to get new hardware.

The answer was simple for me – they’re coming out with something new, it’s badass, I’m getting it. LOL. But in all seriousness – if you have a 3GS and if you haven’t played with a “4” yet, don’t do it…you’ll want one.

desk

I was one of the lucky few that pre-ordered and didn’t have to deal with the lines today. Luckily Wendy was on summer break so rather than take a day off (like I did while waiting for my iPad) – my wonderful wife stayed home to make sure I got my new toy.

1

Out of the box, the phone looks noticeably more “narrow” or “taller” – this makes it feel better in hand and when talking on the phone- like a dedicated cell phone as opposed to a smart phone (think flip phone) Ergonomically its just better. There seems to be a more solid feel to it than the 3GS, my best analogy would be that the 3GS is like a Honda interior. Looks good, does the job, plasticy but done well. The 4 is a BMW, next level, great engineering and fitment – solid. Apple was smart to bring back a metal/aluminum feel to the phone (as in the original iPhone) – it definitely feels more substantial.

2

Here it is next to my 3GS – a little bit of a play on perspective but you get the idea…

3

Out of the box and ready to sync – *that’s my old Scion Daily Driver that my nephew now rocks @Berkeley.

4

Back of both – 3GS soap bar on the right.

5

You’d think that the curves of the 3GS would be nicer for your palm, but the 4’s form factor is amazing in hand. It always felt like I might lose grip of the 3GS, not so with the 4…or maybe I’m just more attentive to not dropping it lol.

7

Another shot, 4 on the left, 3GS on the right.

8

So a quick hit on some of the more noted “features” that are on the 4:

Retina Display – AMAZING. Makes the 3GS look pretty crappy to be honest. Apps that I’ve been using for a long time looked as if they’d had a redesign…seriously. Everything looks so much more elegant.
Facetime – We’re in the Jetsons era, still a bit choppy when I used it with my brother (granted he was at an apple store using their wifi) but I’d say it’s comparable to iChat for sure..the front and rear camera swap is slick.
HD Vid and Camera / Flash- I haven’t played with these yet, will def post some pics from it once skinned and ready to go.
Multitasking – as mentioned above, not applicable to all apps so I’ll have to wait to review this IMO.
and FWIW, the 4 feels noticeably faster than the 3GS running iOS4.

More to come as I break this sucker in…Apple – I hate you and love you at the same time LOL.

Cars & Lees 6.20.10

Actually shocked I took so many pics this time around…seemed to be a lot of old school Skylines. A good overall turnout, perhaps because it was fathers day weekend?

R35 Skyline GTR on some nice LM’s…appear to be the special editions, but nowadays anyone can paint centers and get red caps.

Cars & Lee’s 6.12.10

I’m officially changing the name – a few buddies of mine always hit Lee’s right after this so I don’t consider it Cars and “Coffee” anymore lol. Here’s the pics from last Sat.

I felt compelled to take a pic of this 430 simply because it was rocking some bigass wheels…when I say bigass, I mean 20″+ (I want to say the rear was a 21?) – shocking, but to each his own…
IMG_5412_rev

Shot of the back row – this is why we wake up early and are a bit spoiled here in SoCal…(even though a Viper is in the shot – bleh) – take a look at all the cars and the people, enjoying an early Sat AM.

Rapide showed up – still not my particular choice at this price range for a 4 door lux, but a pretty car…not feelin the Social Security Color though…COME ON.

A few old pics I ran across…

Just thought these were interesting…

Shot of a Carrera GT, one of the “Dirty Dozen” – known on the internet as the guy who has 12 pretty badass cars. His wife even drove an RD Sport M5 at the time…craze.

Me (again) holding up my CF hood from my old school E46 back in 2001 – yes, they had CF in 2001, I was a very early adopter of what is commonplace now. CF is pretty much played now IMO unless you’re doing something sick with it.

Cars, Cars, Cops, Cars…

Busy weekend. Aside from the usual Cars & Coffee, I rolled up to Venice with my buddies to checkout the HellaFlush meet, got a HellaTicket which was Hellawack, then rolled to Ogara Coach to checkout some sick SuperCars. All in all, can’t complain – great weather, good friends and some badass cars.

First off Cars & Coffee…nothing crazy noticeable, but these caught my eye…

Sweet racing livery on this Exige.

After leaving HellaDisappointing, I got a HellaTicket for HellaFailure to HellaYield to a emergency vehicle. I’m gonna have to Hellafight it because we didn’t hear it, were stuck in crazy traffic and couldn’t move to the left if we Hellatried. I was pretty much HellaOver-it at this point.

The only redeeming value was that we were on our way to Ogara where a buddy mentioned that 4 of the sickest SuperCars were under the same roof.

NOTE: The following pics were from my iPhone, didn’t want to roll in with full camera gear lol.

If you only had one to choose from…which one would it be?? I’d have to go with the Zonda-R, would be so sick to roll up to Lee’s in that thing. hahahaha.

Some inspiration/motivation.

From Bruce Lee…good stuff.

“Bruce had me up to three miles a day, really at a good pace. We’d run the three miles in twenty-one or twenty-two minutes. Just under eight minutes a mile [Note: when running on his own in 1968, Lee would get his time down to six-and-a half minutes per mile]. So this morning he said to me “We’re going to go five.” I said, “Bruce, I can’t go five. I’m a helluva lot older than you are, and I can’t do five.” He said, “When we get to three, we’ll shift gears and it’s only two more and you’ll do it.” I said “Okay, hell, I’ll go for it.” So we get to three, we go into the fourth mile and I’m okay for three or four minutes, and then I really begin to give out. I’m tired, my heart’s pounding, I can’t go any more and so I say to him, “Bruce if I run any more,” –and we’re still running-”if I run any more I’m liable to have a heart attack and die.” He said, “Then die.” It made me so mad that I went the full five miles. Afterward I went to the shower and then I wanted to talk to him about it. I said, you know, “Why did you say that?” He said, “Because you might as well be dead. Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

Cars & Coffee 5.29

Gorgeous Memorial Day weekend for Cars & Coffee…marquee was “MicroCars” apparently – some pretty cool stuff. Lots of Isettas and these 2 lil’ guys.

458= Space Mountain.

Went to the local Ferrari dealer to checkout the 458 today. First time I’ve seen it in person as Ferrari didn’t show at LA Autoshow Media Day and historically, cars look better in person so I was anxiously awaiting to see this car in person. I gotta say I was seriously disappointed. Even my buddy Tony who was with me (who is a real “Tifosi”) felt that the 458 was “fail”. Some parts just felt…well…CHEAP. The sideskirt (unpainted) looked gimicky, not to mention the front end “flaps” that work for aerodynamics. The prancing horse emblem on the front sticks out of a single “stem” and looks CRAZY out of place. The interior was straight out of Space Mountain – I understand the whole driver oriented cockpit deal, but sitting on both the drivers and passengers side, I found it to all be just a little too odd. The center console is what really reminded me of Space Mountain, just too futuristic for my tastes. I’m not hating, in fact – maybe its a design that we’ll all grow into…all pics courtesy of my buddy Tony, Mr. Tifosi himself…who didn’t particularly like the car either.

This is a nice angle, a little reminiscent of the 360 in the rear 3/4.

458_s

Rear shot, the 2 light deal and the cutouts are a bit odd (although very aero functional) – a lot of controversy surrounds the use of the 3 tips, but for those that really know Ferrari’s, they’ll remember that the F40 had 3 tips as well..

458_r

Front head on – the silver diffusors in the bumper move up and down (not mechanically) and that silver prancing horse sticks out on a stick (literally) which is a bit odd. Lots of cutouts for aero, the front looks MEAN.

458_f

Drivers Side – cockpit, all oriented towards the driver. The steering wheel had WAY too many buttons, notice no stalks for the turn signal and wipers – they’re all on the steering wheel.

458_c

Just reminds me of waiting in line forever…SPACE MOUNTAIN! I dunno why, but the 3 button deal and overall shape of the center console just brings me back to Disneyland lol.

458_sm

BUSTED…me checking out the 458 LOL.

458

You’ve got the touch!!!

You’ve got the POWER!! LOL.

Anyone who’s into cars knows that Japanese car manufacturers OWN the market for great navigation. They were the first to introduce it, first to offer touch screen and simply the best function wise. Counter that with the European offerings for Navi…well, lemme just say – they’ve been pretty bad. Porsche’s original PCM was particularly archaic considering in 2006 our Cayenne had PCM (Porsche Communication Management) and didn’t even offer a touch screen, but rather utilized 2 scroll buttons (UGH). It would take minutes to just input a location, scroll then push, scroll then push – letter by letter, HORRIBLE. Turn by turn directions were decent, but input and selection was such a chore due to the scrolling necessary for each selection that we’d often not even use it.

Porsche’s new PCM 3.0 (Touch Screen) is WORLDS better than the old PCM. Seriously. Much more intuitive function-wise, not to mention that the touch capability KILLS the old 2 button scroll deal. Address input is substantially faster, simpler and the format makes much more sense.

Did I mention it reads MP3’s exceptionally well? The old version of PCM touted “WMA” functionality but it was hit and miss. PCM 3.o luvs MP3’s. Wife’s music not mine, BTW LOL. Reads MP3’s like a champ – including title, track, etc. Note the new SD card slot option,  a good alternative to burning CD’s. Simply scroll or touch the screen with your finger and you’re to your particular track. On the old PCM, you’d have to know the # and punch it in manually.

pcm1

This is pretty sick as well, up to minute traffic! Not even offered on the old PCM, again – another nice addition, esp. when you’re in a hurry to get to your destination.

pcm2

Satellite Radio…nice when you don’t want to listen to commercials, some good channels as well.

pcm3

Has bluetooth as well obviously – I can’t say enough of how much better this version of PCM is. Intuitively works like a “JDM” NAV, super easy to use 0- which is what you need when you’re driving! Hopefully other European manufacturers have followed suit and integrated touch into their setups as well, works so much better than any type of scrolling (iDrive) technology…
