EuroJournal: Part 1 *Geneva*

Personal Random Excerpts and thoughts from the trip, city by city.
Note: A lot of these pics are iPhone only – sorry in advance for the quality!

It all started as the usual talk – My buddy Arling has always used the “When we go to..” even though we probably both figured I wouldn’t be anytime soon – this time around it was about the Geneva Autosalon. “So next year when we go to Geneva, we’ll have to visit some other places too since we’re there.” – one thing leads to another, next thing you know my other friend starts saying “yeah, it’ll be a great trip – I can handle all the little stuff, carry your guys bags LOL” – come late December of last year and we’re actually looking at dates…I still wasn’t fully committed, but to be real honest, the next thing that happened pushed me to go.

On Friday Dec 27th, my brother had a heart attack. He should’ve died according to what the doctors called “the widowmaker”, which I always referred to as the Porsche GT2 personally – if he had waited or any other circumstances took place, he may not have made it. Thank god he did. My Dad had passed away in January, my sister has been fighting cancer, then this happens.  Life is short. We all have so much life we all have yet to live, I don’t want to waste time– no regrets, no missed opportunities.

Every conversation regarding the trip after this was about locking things in. Plane tickets, factory tours, etc. We were fortunate that Arling is in Europe pretty much every quarter so we had a man on the ground so to speak to help us layout our travel plans. It was a lot to do in 2 weeks, especially considering we were driving 75% of the trip, which actually ended up being to our advantage in the end.

On March 12th  (incidentally my bro’s bday) – we left for Europe.

Last minute run to the important places…

IMG_2619

Joe stole this from WalMart…he said on accident. Who puts something in their pocket on accident?!?! LOL. BTW, I had plenty of that – brand name too dude.
IMG_2622

Double checking our bags.
A few lbs to spare…LOL.
IMG_2620

Joe and I bought (and brought) these as a joke, but we ended up eating them at the Ring! Was actually pretty good.
IMG_2621

New Plane – 6 mos in service, Lufthansa gets an A+ (Good call AW), not a fan of flying.
IMG_2670

Chase stickers? CHECK!
IMG_2636

I ate a bunch of these…nervousness? Perhaps – they were damn good though. I probably had 6 of these during the flight LOL?
IMG_2644

And…we’re here. Airplane mode off LOL. Data roaming…ON.
IMG_2668

Nice tweet from Lufthansa! Talk about good marketing – I had tagged them in an IG post and this is what i got back.
IMG_2680

Yeah, not in Cali anymore…at least I got the international data plan LOL.
IMG_2685

Geneve Day 1:
The airport happens to drop us off at the local train station as which is mighty convenient considering we won’t have a car until Cologne. I still didn’t have any Euro so AW insisted on me taking 100 Euro since I was trying to use my CC everywhere and I hadn’t gotten used to the machines yet. We bought our rail pass and headed off to our hotel.
I actually had a say in this hotel since I wanted to use some rewards points on the trip. Our hotel was quite nice considering the options available. The Hotel Auteuil Manotel Geneva was clean and had great reviews, walking distance from the train station as well.

Thanks for the caption guys LOL.
IMG_2718

We got to the hotel, checked in then decided to check in at the auto salon real quick – also Joe was meeting one of his French friends, Sylvain as he was in town for 1 day to checkout the show. “Man this elevator is small” I thought as we all crammed into an elevator that says fits “8” LOL. There were 3 of us with some luggage. I’d find out later, all elevators are small in Europe. We’re just fat Americans LOL.

That’s my look of sheer terror below…
elevator

At the show, we met at Ruf, our hosts for the show and I took a quick walk thru the show to see what I was dealing with for the next few days…HOLY COW, I’ve never been around such an amazing array of vehicles all under one roof. From manufacturer to tuner, they were all here with the best cars and products.

Refer back to my blog regarding the show and cars itself here:

IMG_2719

Autosalon: One of the main reasons we came and man, it did not disappoint. Aftermarket – check. Exotics – check. Cars you can’t find in the US from “normal manufacturers” – check. If you’re a car guy, you’ve gotta make it out to this show. Wildest tuner cars were the FAB Design P1 and the Brabus 6×6. Wildest manufacturer cars? RUF CTR3 and P1…can’t forget the Huracan launch as well, although I did see a preview a few weeks before so I wasn’t jocking it as much as I normally would.

Our first night we ate Chinese LOL! Arling had eaten at this place before and it was declared “Albert Safe” – the lady spoke Mandarin and AW ordered for us. Since I “forced” us to eat something basic, I paid – which was sort of funny cuz I still didn’t realize the conversion. That was an expensive Chinese dinner LOL! ($140? For 3 plates? And soup) – food was good though and I was just happy to have landed.

IMG_2824

Geneve Day 2:
I was up early (which would be a prevailing theme) as was AW, but Joe was dead asleep. Think I was exaggerating about the elevator earlier?
Peep this.
IMG_2836

That’s the entire elevator floor LOL.
I decided to head over to the Starbucks near the train station, which was on the way to the show. I stuck the first “Chase” stickers here on the second floor.  As I waited for the crosswalk, I couldn’t really tell if it was “walk or don’t walk” but the lady next to me started to walk, so I did to. Then as a car approaches she starts to run and I’m like WTF, so I run too…the irony, I was scared of the flight, but ultimately it was almost a car that did me in. LOL! Once I got my bill from Amex with the exchange rate I should’ve got hit LOL, I was paying $14 for every Caramel Machiatto and Croissant I ate in Geneva LOL! I think I had this order 4 times while I was there? LOL.

IMG_2844

Although we had some time to walk around the night before, I figured I could really spend some time with cars today to ensure I got all the content I wanted.

Thx again for all the hospitality Ruf family…
IMG_2892

IMG_2879
Had my first Panini at lunch as I hit both halls, also had an opportunity to get up close and personal with the McLaren cars!

IMG_2905

Dinner was pretty good as we tried a specialty hamburger joint called “Holy Cow” LOL. The beef was “different” but not bad by any means and the bathroom was free! Thanks Joe!

IMG_2971

IMG_2970

IMG_2969

Geneve Day 3:
When I arrived at the Autosalon it was PACKED. I mean PACKED like sardines – not to mention it was unusually hot inside as they were not used to the seasonally warm weather(it’s usually snowing). They didn’t make adjustments for the temp inside the center. I metup with a friend quickly then decided to go back to the show once Joe was up, Saturday is one of the more “public” days so I guess I should’ve expected this.

IMG_2990

AW had suggested I checkout this fountain thing on Lake Geneva when I left the show. I decided to walk rather than take a taxi since I didn’t want to deal with not knowing exactly where I’m going. I used my maps on my iPhone (DATA!!) which was very accurate. While walking I saw a Ferrari FF and a Mercedes Benz SLS Black Series, well worn and driven daily apparently. I also stopped off at a few fancy watch and high-end brand places.

IMG_2995

IMG_3055

IMG_3008

Fountain of Geneva: Next, I decided to walk out to the other side of Geneva where the famous Geneva fountain is. I placed a “Chase” sticker on one of the electrical boxes in front of the two ladies statue that represent Switzerland and Geneva (or something like that) – lots of fancy shops, mostly high-end watch places, Rolex, Hublot, AP – my watch buddies would be in heaven. It makes sense I suppose since it is GENEVA LOL. I found an apple store while wandering around and drank another $11 caramel machiatto so I could use the free wifi LOL. I ran in to see if they had anything out of the ordinary but they didn’t. There was a cool toystore that I visited but it didn’t have anything I couldn’t find online and at this point of the trip I was still trying to “conserve” luggage space – LOL. Yeah, that would be a pretty funny joke later.

IMG_2998

IMG_3020

IMG_3025

IMG_3026

IMG_3027

For lunch I tried McDonalds; it was actually pretty good, although it was EXPENSIVE! I also happened to see that they still fry their apple pies, which I must say was mighty tasty. I ate these fried chicken strips since they didn’t have nuggets – they were well done with some slight spice to them. Pretty sure my combo was $16 and that was before the apple pie LOL. I also noticed that the CC machines here prefer the “chip” card although they do swipe as well for the US CC’s. I ended up eating on the second floor – interestingly, when you request “take away” which is “to go”, they really pack your stuff well. I had my drink and my food all in one nice package that would’ve allowed me to get it back to the hotel in one piece, not so much that way here in the US LOL.

IMG_3058

IMG_3068

Back at the Autosalon, I tried to wrapup any shots I may have missed the previous two days.

Last dinner in Geneva was at this cool Italian place that we happened to stumble upon with a woodfire pizza oven. Yes, Italian in Switzerland, this theme would continue throughout our trip…

The Chase Sticker Story…

If you’re my friend on Facebook, by now you’ve probably had your fill of the “Chase Sticker” posts, but for those that weren’t a part of it or if you missed a post, I figured I’d aggregate them all here in one place.
It started off as a way for me to let Chase know that I was thinking of him during my trip, it’s not easy (honestly) to leave your 6 month old at home, even as a guy – I didn’t want to miss out on anything, but I also wanted to show him that anything is possible and that how important it is for him to follow his dreams. Part of it was overcoming fear as well (I have a pretty bad phobia of flying) so I wanted Chase to know that he can’t let anything stand in the way of what he wants to accomplish – he can do anything and I as his Dad wanted to back those words up. Leaving the stickers and comments would give Chase something to drive towards, to visit the spots – in the event (god forbid) something were to happen to me on the trip, yes – I was that scared of flying. (Ironically, going 230KPH sustained on the autobahn and driving the Nurburgring in the wet didn’t concern me at all). My buddy Krist (stickyicons.com) made some extra “Chase” stickers from an original design for Chase’s bedroom. It’s a Lego font and one of the tumbler’s he gave me during Christmas had a bunch of spare stickers in it. When I was packing for the trip, I decided to throw these in my backpack and stick them in each city I stopped in – thus the idea was born.
The first Chase sticker was placed in Geneva, where we were attending the Auto Salon:

3.14.14
While on this trip, I brought along a few extra “Chase” Lego Logo stickers with me to leave in each city we stay in. Chase, your job when you grow up is to find these locations (the sticker may be gone) and take a pic with your significant other at each spot. Your first spot is in the second floor of the Geneva Starbucks. Love you buddy.
1184821_10152090518734773_1164558049_n

3.15.15
Geneva spot #2: Chase – this was your Uncle AW’s idea since I went into the city today. Across the bridge into “Old Geneva” – there’s a statue of 2 ladies that represent Geneva and Switzerland. Walk from that towards the famous fountain and there’s an electrical box with your sticker on it. Buy me a watch at a local store LOL
1966692_10152092680919773_156782923_n

3.16.14
Chase Sticker #3 : Brussels / Autoworld Museum. There is a pole in front of the fountain before you get to Autoworld, your uncle Arling reminded me to stick one on the way out! Get a fresh Belgian waffle from the mobile guy with your special someone! I’m smiling because we were all laughing they the pole was dirty…
578593_10152094953754773_1828964544_n

3.17.14
Chase Sticker #4: Nurburgring, Germany: Nordschleife “The Ring” – Chase, this is the holy land for car enthusiasts, there is nothing more. Find your sticker on one of the posts where the gate covers the long straight – look for the “Bilstein” Banner. If you’ve made it this far, you might as well drive it as well – buckle up and remember not to lift thru the turns. Hopefully you’re driving one of my cars LOL.
1655245_10152096724929773_390478300_o

3.19.14
Chase Sticker #5 : Stuttgart / Zuffenhausen | Chase, find your sticker at the Porsche Museum Rail Stop at the pole closest to the stairs. I don’t think this one will stay buddy, the place is way too clean and they really do a great job of maintaining everything (very German) Grab a bite to eat at Boxenstopp inside the museum, the burgers are great
1970509_10152100278244773_663457195_n

3.20.14
Chase Sticker #6 Lamborghini Corporate | Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. Chase, look for locker #88 in the Museum (your moms old pager number!) inside you’ll find your sticker. This is my favorite brand, although this trip makes me appreciate each manufacturers specialties much more. Whether you end up being a Lambo, Ferrari, Pagani, Porsche, BMW or Audi guy, you’re still my guy. Love you buddy.
14881_10152102573234773_1659425702_n

3.21.14
Chase “Sticker” #7 – at the top of Cattedrale Di Santa Maria del Fiore, 437 steps up, I wrote your name. A sticker wouldn’t stick and I’m down to 3 so make the trek up and enjoy the view. Me and your Uncle AW made it all the way, your Tito Joe tried valiantly but had to tap out at the base of the dome. Uncle AW took this pic, I’m pointing to your name! I miss you, your mom and Mochi!
1960849_10152104333189773_1519059798_o

3.23.14
Chase Sticker #8: Piazza San Marcos/St. Marks Square – Venezia/Venice, Italy. Chase, your sticker is on a informational board facing the campanile, on the opposite side of Cafe Florian’. This city is pretty amazing, surrounded by water, people use gondola’s to get around. I didn’t take a Gondola ride with the guys LOL, I saved that for you and Mom. (Plus, we all wanted to race each other and that would’ve been pretty expensive) The city is amazing, lots of stuff to see buddy. Take your special someone here and get some coffee at Cafe Florian then go shopping! Stay warm though, it’s pretty crazy cold!!
1975048_10152108503124773_682130050_n

3.23.14
Chase Sticker #9 : Salzburg, Austria – Chase, they say Redbull gives you wings, but faith in yourself will bring you much further. Remember, there’s nothing you can’t do and when people say you can’t, the best part is proving them wrong. I can’t wait to see what you’re passionate about and where life brings you. The sticker is in the cylinder elevator at the museum, top left corner. Even if it’s gone, think that I had to take this elevator 4 times to get this done LOL. Love you buddy, 1 sticker left for Munich!!!
1932245_10152109223804773_1172278289_n

3.25.14
Chase Sticker #9 : Marienplatz, Munich, Chase – this is the last sticker for this European adventure, find it on a pole around the corner from the Apple Store. I visited this city about 13 years ago before your mom and I were married, at the time I actually told my boss (I was here for work) I was going to marry her, I definitely made the right choice! Once you’ve found all the stickers it’s time to stick some of your own…Your mom and I will have to come find them…as long as they’re not in France LOL

Cars & Coffee…oh wait, Geneva Auto Salon: A closer look.

I’d normally be at Cars & Coffee on an early Saturday AM, but as you know I’m in Geneva… Cars & Coffee Irvine meanwhile had a 918, Singer, F50 and my boy Alex/Sharky’s GT3RS show up – of course the one weekend I’m away LOL. The usual suspects were all there so I’m sure I’ll have content as needed. After a $7.50 USD Carmel Machiatto (yeah, I finally figured out the exchange rate), I made my way back to the busiest day of the Autosalon apparently! It was CRAZY. I metup quickly with a friend from London, then – since Joe was still knocked out in the room, found myself wandering thru “Old” Geneve and checking out the famous fountain and a bunch of fancy watch stores. It worked out well since I had an opportunity to drop Chase sticker #2 next to this giant water fountain that Geneva is known for…

chase2
There you go buddy – across from the 2 ladies statue facing the fountain. While you’re there, pickup a watch for your good ol’ Dad across the street!!

After walking back, I scooped up Joe and we headed to the Autosalon.

Front of the CTR3 – I believe only 24 of these are in existence…RARE.

I believe that speedo said 450KPH….that’s 279MPH. YIKES.

IMG_0936_rev
The One:1′s little bro – the Agera S

IMG_0878_rev
Almost completely skipped the Bugatti booth! They’re really trying to sell this last run of Vitesse’s – they won’t even think about a new model until these are all sold out. This one reminded me of Tilikum, have you seen Blackfish? UGH. Go watch it…then be bummed out LOL.

IMG_0795_rev
McLaren really has done well with the 650S and the P1 – great product planning and design IMO.

IMG_0805_rev
As you know, I’m a huge fan of aftermarket – but even I wouldn’t mess with the P1.

IMG_0865_rev
One we should have here – the mighty Audi RS6 Avant

IMG_0867_rev
Wagons are insanely popular in Europe, as most of their cars actually get “used”.

That’s it for now, it’s pretty much GO GO Gadget from here on out so I’ll update when I can.

Geneva Auto Salon 2014

As nuts as it sounds, I’m in Geneva. What started out as my buddy AW saying “When we go to Geneva” about a year ago and me saying “yeah, yeah ok…” has turned into this blog post. There’s a longer story behind it which I’m sure I’ll eventually post, but in the meantime – here’s a few pics from the first day.

IMG_9833_rev
The new ///M3 is here, my first time seeing it in person – still feels weird to call the sedan the ///M3. Overall a very good looking car, although I feel BMW did over do it a bit with the M logo’s everywhere.

IMG_9775_rev
Ferrari 458 Speciale – looks great in grey, rear is sooo high. Def pref this over the blue we saw in BH at launch.

IMG_0513_rev
Lamborghini Huracan…so amazing in the taste the rainbow colors. At the preview, we saw a silver one which was a bit anti-climactic but man it just kills in these colors.

IMG_0252_rev
Some McLaren P1 love…this car is so over the top yet so perfect in every way.

IMG_0244_rev
If you told me I could only own one car for the rest of my life…this would DEFINITELY be in the running.

IMG_0295_rev
Also at McLaren, the newly released Speciale fighter – the 650PS spyder. Looks amazing in person – all the right pieces.

IMG_0439
FAB Design brought out their MODIFIED P1…yeah, it’s like putting bigger boobs on Kate Upton…I dunno about that (while some of you are screaming yes!). Along with additional Carbon Aero they also added lightweight CF wheels. Crazy and controversial for sure.

IMG_0040_rev
Also at FAB Design, a modified Aventador…because if you have the balls to mess with a McLaren P1 – an Aventador ain’t nothin!!!

IMG_0108_rev
The last, last, edition of the Zonda supposedly – but what a way to go…Zonda Revolucion.

IMG_9803_rev
Not to be outdone, Koenigsegg brought out their ONE:1 – definitely a sneak attack at the show.

DSC00238
Me and the Brabus 700 6×6 G63 battlewagon…some next level SUV action going on here LOL.

chase_sticker
Last but not least, a pic of a Chase lego logo sticker at the local Starbucks here in Geneva. He’s just over 6 mos old, but I’m hoping one day he’ll travel to these same spots (I’m going to leave one in each city we visit) with his significant other and take a pic. The sticker may be gone, but the location and memory will still be there! First spot buddy! Geneva Starbucks, second level near the sign!!

More to come, I need to get some rest and adjust to the time…Zzzzz.

IMG_8775_rev2

A fun run with the homies…

My buddies F12 was recently delivered (cars in front of the pad) and for its second time out he wanted to take it for a spin thru the local canyon. We gathered some of the crew and made our way over to Cars & Coffee. Aside from the GoPro incident, which tuned out okay as well – it was a pretty mellow and fun cruise.

Getting gas with the guys before the run…with us: Ferrari F12, Ferrari F430 (2), 430 Spyder, 360 Challenge Stradale, Boxster S, ///M3 and Audi R8.
IMG_8758_rev

After the run, I had my friend drive my car so I could take some candids on the way to breakfast.

IMG_8775_rev2

IMG_8781_rev

10 years old and this thing is still sexy.
IMG_8785_rev

Monster on the move…I REALLY tried to give some distance between my car and the F12 whenever I could (entering and exiting turns) but it makes up ground soooo fast…and he wasn’t even trying LOL.
IMG_8851_rev

Rod’s F430 aka the instigator LOL.
IMG_8831_rev

Mel’s Stradale on the move.
IMG_8844_rev

Stopped at the light.
IMG_8864_rev

I don’t have much video of the Canyon Run…which I’m willing to post LOL. But will try and edit what tomorrow and post it up. Thanks for checking in!

SEMA 2013 wrap-up 50+ images

Another SEMA has come and gone and man, every year the time seems to go by so much faster! I actually stayed 3 days this year (normally I’m a turn and burn guy) to provide some content for #livefromsema as well as #drivingline, if you haven’t checked it out you can find the articles at the links below:

drivingline.com

livefromsema.com

The turnout was pretty amazing – I’d say the biggest turnout prior to the dip in the economy by far…here’s some shots from my time at the show:

I hit the convention center about an hour before general opening (Media is allowed in half an hour) Since they moved the Media center to the Main hall, I decided to hit that first.

I believe this was the only RS7 at SEMA, at the H&R booth – STATIC. (Static = not on air)
IMG_3838_rev

Also at the H&R Booth, Rotiforms 964. I’ve been pretty tough on Rotiform in the past -but their latest offerings are really on point. Checkout that Fuchs style multi-piece.
IMG_4656_rev

So much right going on with this car…and yes, STATIC.
IMG_4645_rev

H&R also had the latest 4 series (3 series) on some Breytons – there’s a name I haven’t heard in a minute.
IMG_3905_rev

From STATIC to AIR, Accuair had an S7 that was crazy dumped on the other corner of the entrance.

With SEMA around the corner I figured now is as good as a time as any to post up some old content LOL! First off a big congrats to my friends Jay and Karen – they’re getting married!! For those that say “it’s about time” – I always say, somethings are worth the wait!

Be sure to peep out Jay’s FR-S madness here

Aside from that – some pics from the OC Autoshow…yeah, I went with some friends. Hell, it was free – tough to beat!

Some Audi RS7 goodness…yeah, obviously I’ve been paying more attention to the 4-door performance market LOL.
